McMullen Brothers From Scotland

According to verbal family history passed down through several generations three McMullen brothers sailed from Scotland to Nova Scotia, Canada shortly before the Revolutionary War. Traveling south at least two brothers maintained residences in North Carolina and Georgia.

A letter, written by Louis S. McMullen (son of John Eaton McMullen) on May 5, 1924 speaks of this history. Louis was 75 at time of letter and his father and brothers William and Charnick Wilson McMullen (see below).

This history is the same as passed down in the family of James Parramore McMullen, born June 11, 1823 in Telfair County, GA and died April 17, 1895 in Clearwater, Pinellas County, FL. He married Elizabeth Campbell on Dec. 26 1844 in Florida, daughter of John Campbell, Jr. and Nancy Taylor. Elizabeth was born Feb. 25, 1825 in Appling County, GA

James Parramore McMullen's history gives Eli, James and Robert McMullen sailed in 1774-1775 from Scotland to Nova Scotia. James, Sr. served as a drummer boy in the Revolutionary War. Eli may also be known as Eli William. James Parramore would be a grandson of James the drummer boy.

James Parramore McMullen clan is as follows:
    1. Eli (William) McMullen, born 1760 in Scotland, was in Halifax County, NC with an 1817 Estate Settlement Record listing his children as: William, Cullen (married Abigale Whitehead 12/21/1816) then moved to TN then MS around 1830, Nathan, Eli, James, Lewis, Dempsey, Margaret, Elizabeth and Sallie.

    2. James McMullen, born 1758 in Scotland, married Sarah Minton 01/28/1802 in NC and their children were: William, James William born 1788, Nancy born 1789, Elizabeth born 1790, Rebecca born 1791, Laura born 1792 and Sarah born 1792.

    3. Robert McMullen, born 1762 in Scotland – no records

Information I have proved on my clan:

John Eaton McMullen

Earliest record for John is the marriage certificate. His date of birth is calculated by census records and the 1860 Georgia Mortality Census Schedule T655 Roll 8 Echols County page 231: “John E. McMullen, age 42, male, white, married, born in Georgia, died in June (1859) farmer cause of death - liver complaint length of illness - 2 months.”  Given the age of 42 his date of birth had to be between June 27, 1816 and June 26, 1817.

John Eaton McMullen married Mary Elizabeth Byington August 10, 1843, in Baldwin County, GA. John was 26 and Mary was 15. Their first child, Benjamin, was born August 1844 when Mary was 16 years old)

Dates placing John in various locations:
1843 married in Baldwin County, GA
1853 October in Irwin County, GA
1855 October in Irwin County, GA
1858 Still in Irwin County, GA
1859 June – died in Echols County, GA

Charnick Wilson McMullen
1831: Charnick Wilson McMullen dates per Cemeteries of Prairie County, AR are 10/16/1831 – 4/27/1897
1870: Census, CW McMullen gives his state of birth as Georgia.
1852: Birth of son – living in Culbreth (Randolph County), GA
Charnick Wilson McMullen’s first marriage was to Julia ? and of that union was at least one child, John William McMullen, born November 25, 1852 in Culbreth, Georgia.  Speculation from verbal family history is there was also a daughter named Mary.

1862 - 1865 Served in Civil War

Military Records show C.W. McMullen served under the Muster Roll of Company I, 11th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army Northern Virginia C.S.A., Randolph County Georgia “Quitman Greys” and listed of the roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865.  He enlisted March 1862 in Georgetown, Georgia under Lt. Bledsoe as a Private.  Last paid to April 30, 1863 and was wounded and captured on July 3rd or 5th of 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  Charnick W. McMullen appears on a roll of Prisoners of War at Point Lookout, Maryland with a date of arrival in Baltimore, Maryland on September 16, 1863 and exchanged on February 13, 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland.

1865:  married Nancy Amanda Connelly
Charnick Wilson McMullen’s second marriage was to Nancy Amanda Connelly (born 1837 in Prosperity, Newberry, South Carolina, and died January 05, 1896 in Arkansas) July 05, 1865 in Barbour County, Alabama.  Both are buried in Hardshell Cemetery in Prairie County, Arkansas.

William McMullen
According to verbal history he was older than John (that would make him born before 1817) and that's all I have on him.

Excepts from May 15, 1924 letter written by Louis S. McMullen:
".... My father had two brothers and two sisters his youngest brother and sister were living in Irwin County when we moved there My father's youngest brother was named Charnic I remember him well his wife died in Irwin County leaving two children, John and Mary I played with them and we went to school together and educational advantages at that time being meager I went to school with my father's youngest sister altho she was married having no children. She attended the same school before my father moved to Echols County. Uncle Charnic had moved to Enfola, Alabama......

--Personal Note:  This letter states his father, John Eaton McMullen, was born in North Carolina between 1814-1820 and came to Wilkinson County, Georgia as a young man as a railroad mechanic and helped build the bridges from Macon to Savannah before marrying Elizabeth Byington.  However, in the later census information concerning his children -- all give Georgia as his place of birth as well as Charnic lists Georgia in the 1870 Census as birth place.

The McMullen Tree has hundreds of branches and I'm looking for my fit into the three brothers that sailed from Scotland.
